The poet Jeremias Gotthelf (1797–1854),
who worked as a pastor in the Emmental for a long time, described the Emmental like this:
“Narrowly bounded is its horizon by wooded hills, at the foot of which countless valleys stretch, watered by rushing streams that roll their debris in silent murmurs until they find the womb of the Emme.[3]
And about the people:
“Similar to his country is the Emmental. He does not have a wide range of vision, but he looks at what is close to him cleverly and sharply; he does not grasp new things quickly… but what he has once grasped, he holds on to with wonderful tenacity.
